Sandro Mendonça is Stream Leader for Technology Intelligence at the Observatory on Patents and Technology of the European Patent Office. Previously to joining the EPO he served as Associate Professor at the Department of Economics of Iscte – Lisbon University Institute, Invited Professor at ISEG/ULisboa, and Visiting Professor at the Università degli Studi dell’Insubria. His experiences include responsibilities as Executive Board Member of the Portuguese communications authority (ANACOM), member of the governing body of Ceadi (the intelligence council of the Brazilian telecommunications regulator, Anatel), delegate to the Network of Economic Regulators (OECD), member of the advisory board of the monitoring unit of the Portuguese official national authority for cybersecurity (CNCS), science officer of the Ibero-American program for science and technology (CYTED), member of the executive committee of the Portuguese media watch (OberCom), and Fellow Economist at the European Commission (DG Grow). German Marshall Fund Fellow since 2012 and nominated “European Young Leader” by the Friends of Europe Foundation in 2015. He was a visiting scholar of King’s College, London, in 2012 and a Fellow of SPRU, University of Sussex, during 2016-2018. He was the coordinator of the report “The Futures of Big Tech in Europe” for the European Commission (published in 2024, DG RTD). He held columns in several newspapers and magazines.
